About the place

The church stands on the DN1 in the town centre, next to the town hall. It was designed by the architect André Lecomte du Noüy and built in 1902–1903 on the ruins of an old inn; the work was finished by the contractor Pietro Axerio, a builder for the Royal Court. It has a cross-shaped plan and two towers, with walls of river stone outside and brick inside. It was consecrated in October 1904.

The royal family donated the land and paid for the painting, the furniture and the bells, and the stained glass was made in 1902 by a Bavarian craftsman at the request of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth. The main tower, bombed in 1916, was rebuilt in 1920. Today's wall painting dates from 1982, by the hieromonk Rafael Popescu. In the park-like churchyard, in front of the church, stands the monument raised in 1905 to the heroes of the 1877–1878 War of Independence.
